Whether you are a long-term eyelash extension evangelist or a newcomer to the world of eyelash extensions, here is our handy guide to what you should and shouldn’t do when caring for your extensions.
Top tips for caring for your eyelash extensions
Keep your new lashes dry for 24 hours
First off, it’s very important that you don’t get your eyelashes wet for at least 24 hours after having your new lashes applied. This is because glue is used to apply the lashes, and it needs time to properly bond before you can get them wet. To stop your lashes from getting wet you should take great care not to wet them in the shower, and perhaps avoid the gym where sweat could also get your lashes wet.
Give your lashes a daily brush
With eyelash extensions, it’s important to brush them daily in order to prevent any of the fibres from becoming tangled. Brushing your lashes every day will keep them looking great even if you have had them in for a few weeks! We can provide you with a small comb suitable for use on your lash extensions.
Use a suitable cleanser
When it comes to eyelash extensions it’s important not to use an oil-based cleanser as this can interfere with the glue used to apply your extensions. If you don’t wear mascara over your extensions, we would advise you to use a gentle cleanser 2-3 times a week which should ideally be specifically formulated for cleansing your lashes.
Make sure you get your lashes maintained.
One of the important things to know about lash extensions is that they require regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. We would recommend that you return to have them refreshed every 2-3 weeks in order to keep your lashes looking their best. A maintenance appointment will usually take about 15 minutes.
Give your lashes a break now and then
If you are a long-term lash extension convert it’s definitely advisable to give your lashes a break every now and again. This gives your natural lashes a chance to recover so they continue to look great with or without extensions.
What not to do!
When you have extensions it’s important to know what not to do! Here are the cardinal sins of eyelash extension care that you should avoid at all costs!
Thou shalt not use oil-based products
We have already explained why it’s important to use a specific cleanser for your lashes, but make sure you avoid oil-based products as they can wreak havoc on the glue used to bond your lashes.
Thou shalt not pick at your lashes
It might be tempting to pick at your lashes to tidy them up but you should avoid this as pulling fibres out of your extensions is the fastest way to get a lopsided look! This is not chic, and you will find that you need more regular maintenance appointments if you pull them out.
Thou shalt not forget your sunglasses on holiday
You might find that the heat of the sun makes it more likely for your lashes to come out whilst on holiday. A good pair of sunglasses can to protect your eyes from the sun’s rays while helping your lashes to stay looking great.
